Lochmara Lodge Wildlife Recovery and Arts Centre
Lodge / Queen Charlotte Sound
Individual units and private chalets offer accommodation for couples, families, walkers, and art and nature lovers. Tucked in Lochmara Bay between the water and the bush-clad hills of the Marlborough Sounds, our guests enjoy gorgeous bay views, our own sandy beach and excellent facilities. Unique and breathtakingly beautiful, Lochmara Lodge offers a total experience. Whether you want to get active and explore or relax and indulge there is something here for you.
Easily accessible by water taxi from Picton or from the Queen Charlotte Track, the Lodge is a wonderful retreat with no road access and no TVs - just the pristine bush environment, countless activity options, million dollar views, and colourful native birdlife.
In-house dining is provided in our relaxed café overlooking the bay. Tempting menus focus on fresh ingredients sourced locally and from our own gardens. The bath house spa is a very special retreat with luxurious and therapeutic treatments and blissful bath escapes.
A Unique Mix of Art and Nature
Art and Nature are a special part of the Lochmara experience. In conjunction with the Department of Conservation, we breed and assist with the rehabilitation of native wildlife. Visitors can:
• Follow the bush paths and learn about native species on our self-guided tour
• Hand feed kakariki parakeets
• Visit the bird and gecko enclosures
• Spot native birds on our predator-controlled property
• Visit injured wildlife in our rehabilitation unit
Art is intrinsic to the character of the Lodge, and is accessible to visitors through an outdoor sculpture trail, two gallery spaces, regular music events, and a residential art workshop series. Visitors can talk with resident artists working in our studio and younger visitors can explore with the Great NZ Art Treasure Hunt. Galleries host a permanent collection and changing exhibitions of work for sale, including painting, sculpture, carving, weaving and jewellery.
