SOLD OUT - Dog Point/Logan Brown Classic Kiwi Picnic
Saturday 9 March 2013
SOLD OUT SORRY
Who would have thought that in 2008 a chance conversation between the two winemakers of Dog Point Vineyards and the partners of Logan Brown would be the start of an increasingly popular event inspired by the traditional kiwi picnic theme.
Now in its fifth year, the Dog Point/Logan Brown Classic Kiwi Picnic is a joint effort between Marlborough based Dog Point Vineyards and the team at Logan Brown Restaurant in Wellington. Each year around 150 guests enjoy the four wines produced by Dog Point Vineyards matched to chic picnic fare created by Logan Brown. It's a relaxed event where the Dog Point and Logan Brown teams have as much fun as the guests.
The picnic regularly sells out, with organisers intentionally maintaining low numbers in keeping with the picnic theme and to give the Dog Point and Logan Brown partners a chance to mingle and mix with guests.
Simply put the picnic concept is to recreate the traditional kiwi picnic matched to Dog Point wines. The emphasis is on seasonal and local produce, and the understated qualities of the produce used. Dishes created are true to the picnic theme but done with finesse. Each dish is carefully matched to Dog Point Vineyard's four wines; two styles of Sauvignon Blanc, a Chardonnay and a Pinot Noir plus Dog Point's in-house bubbles - Two Shady Dogs.
The picnic theme is carried out with careful attention to detail. Guests are greeted at the site by an old HG Holden parked at one end of the picnic site and a tray of punch served to guests from its bonnet, food is served on a mismatch of vintage plates, and an array of floral and brightly coloured retro table clothes cover tables in true picnic style. A game of petanque keeps guests entertained, while barbeques are used to cook fritters of whitebait and paua. In true keeping with the traditional kiwi approach, the picnic site is an area bordered by vineyards and an olive grove one side, and large weeping willows and a meandering creek on the other. Lunch is served in Dog Point's Barrel Hall where bunting is hung to recreate the picnic feel.
Picnic goers come from all over New Zealand with Auckland and Tauranga being well represented.
Everything about the picnic is convivial, with no pretences or illusions of grandeur; this is a celebration of everything that makes the kiwi style of picnic unique and special. In keeping, food and wine is served casually and with more than a hint of fun!
