A rare solo exhibition of Central Otago paintings by much loved NZ painter Michael Smither. These are the largest and final paintings in his acclaimed Central Otago series which began in 1970.

He interprets the landscape in a sensual way reminiscent of human forms, in paintings that radiate light. Surreal in quality, and finished to a fine detail, they have taken up to seven years to complete.

This exhibition would be welcomed in any gallery in the country, but the artist chooses to exhibit in Marlborough because of personal connections, offering a rare opportunity for visitors who appreciate contemporary art to see major paintings by one of New Zealand’s most prominent artists, first hand.

DVDs of the artist in his studio, with interviews, can be played on request at the gallery. There are also books and background information on the artist.

A range of limited edition screenprints by the artist can also be viewed on request.

Works by other leading New Zealand artists can also be viewed from the stockroom by arrangement; the gallery can also arrange a private studio visit to Marlborough’s nationally recognized abstract painter, JS Parker.

Until 11 March 2012. Open Wednesday-Saturdays 12-5pm; other times by arrangement please call Barbara on 0274 408 121.
